Marvel Legends 2017 Walmart Exclusive Black Panther

On the heels of my last post, I thought I'd share my third Black Panther action figure acquired in the last couple months. This was an update to the 2013 Rocket Raccoon Series Black Panther, receiving a cape, extra hands, necklace, and spear. I never got that 2013 Black Panther, so this is like a second chance. I've seen some of my Instagram friends find him on clearance, but I don't recall seeing him in the wild, eventually buying him for a pretty good price with free shipping from an eBay seller.

The cape was actually borrowed from the 2008 Red Hulk Wave's Adam Warlock, and the spear from the 2015 Rhino Wave's Kraven. Not sure where the necklace came from, but would be surprised if it wasn't a recycle of some sorts, the origin of which I cannot determine.

The elbows are a little rubbery on this guy, and the wrist posts are a little too slender- I could see the latter being a problem if changing the hands often, but mine probably got changed more photographing him than he'll get the rest of his time in my collection.

Another mild issue worth noting is the noticeable gap in the abdominal hinge. Built on the Bucky Cap body, I've heard speculation by some YouTube reviews that this six year old mold had worn with age. But I've seen reference photos at MarvelLegends.Net that show gappage, so I feel it's always been an issue with that buck, perhaps less pronounced on Black Panther due to his plain torso. All said, this is a pretty cool action figure! He has good accessories, even if recycled, which are suitable with this comic-inspired interpretation of the character.

Marvel Legends Klaw/Shuri 2pk & Vibranium Suit Black Panther

I posted the photo above on my Instagram at the end of January, and finally got around to photographing them last week. I'll say again, the recent Marvel Legends Black Panther Wave was one of the best in my opinion, and this TRU Exclusive Klaw/Shuri 2pk and Walmart Exclusive Vibranium Suit Black Panther are icing on the cake. Really fun! Check out the video:

It's little wonder that I've become interested in Marvel Legends again considering their output in the last few years. In addition to some great movie figures, the comics-inspired offerings have been fun as well, these included. I've heard gentle complaints regarding Vibranium Black Panther's lack of butterfly joints, but this buck introduced on Spider-UK is a pretty good fit. I'm concerned about the delicate ankles on Shuri, but she looks great in her cape draped over her shoulders and the spear was a good reuse of parts, borrowed from Kraven. Redesigned from his 2012 appearance in Marvel Legends celebrated return, Klaw is a huge improvement while simultaneously retaining the character's classic design.

Marvel Legends Ares (Thor Ragnarok Series)

I passed on this guy several times, but came to my senses after seeing more online reviews and realizing how special he is. Originally a BAF figure from 2008, Hasbro's second year of producing Marvel Legends after ToyBiz. Ares is huge, and was packed with a secondary tray to hold his oversized sword and battle axe, the Gladiator Hulk BAF arm and hammer taking all the room up front. As if that wasn't enough, a large knife that sheathes onto this right thigh is included.

This Ares has some improvements from the original 2006 BAF, namely new shins and feet that allow updated ankle rocker articulation, and a little more exciting paint scheme. The head beneath the mask has been updated with blanked out eyes and shadowed face, which I don't prefer to the original, more conventional portrait. Still, a good trade for the updated skull and crossbones chest emblem, far less cartoony that the original.

The neck articulation is very limited due to the large ball at the end, and his elbow joints can't even bend to a 45 degree angle, but he can do enough for me. I won't need the extra BAF parts for the Gladiator Hulk, but you'll be able buy those from me at my eBay store soon, if you're interested and live with the lower 48 states! I love the paint deco, accessories, and killer plumed helmet on this action figure- great addition to my Marvel Legends collection!

Marvel Legends Retro Series Wolverine & Old Man Logan

I picked these up from TRU at the beginning of last December during a BOGO at 40% off sale, and thought I'd died and gone to heaven. I knew the Retro Series Wolverine would be very popular, and have only seen him on the peg one other time after. Plain-clothed Marvel Legends don't normally appeal to me, unless they are Wolverine, and in spite of the lack of any accessories, Old Man Logan did not disappoint.

While I'll most often display Wolverine unmasked, the masked head looks pretty good- the flared boot tops and wide red belt are classic Wolverine! This figure has articulation to spare, the butterfly joints at the shoulders of particular interest- I also love the swivels at the boot tops...

Pictured below. Wolverine with T'Challa, and with Sub-Mariner and Invincible Iron Man from the recent Marvel Legends Black Panther Wave...

Old Man Logan's sculpt and paint look really great! The bomber jacket is amazing, as is the head sculpt. A proper accessory would have been a hat or baby Hulk in a papoose, two possibilities straight from the original Old Man Logan (2008-2009). I only recently read this series, after subscribing to Marvel Unlimited, and while criticized by some, I enjoyed it. Less grotesque perhaps is another title I read shortly after, the more recent Wolverine: Old Man Logan Vol. 0 - Warzones!

Below, Old Man Logan Vs. my 14.5" Legends Series Hulk, and Star-Lord...

These are two more great Marvel Legends to add to my collection. Nitpicks aside, Hasbro has really cranked out some great action figures the last two or three years, with a lot more coming up. I still have a few to photograph that I've picked up in the last six months, which has turned out to be a return to Marvel Legends here at the Super-DuperToyBox.

Marvel Legends Misty Knight

I picked up this Marvel Legends Misty Knight on eBay awhile back at a reduced price, more in admiration for the toyetic nature of the action figure than any knowledge of the character, nor her affiliation with Heroes for Hire. Created by writer Tony Isabella and artist Arvell Jones, Mercedes Kelly Knight debuted in Marvel Premiere in March of 1975. After teaming with Iron Fist and Luke Cage in Heroes for Hire, Misty more recently teamed up with Valkyrie in Fearless Defenders, a title I've been catching up on now that I'm subscribed to Marvel Unlimited.  My limited character knowledge aside, this figure has a lot going for it with some of the unique sculpt and great color. though I was challenged getting her to stand unaided. Misty was part of the Rhino Wave of 2015, which included some cool figures like Scarlet Spider, Kraven, and Ghost Rider.

Aside from Misty being a little difficult to stand, my only other real complaint would be her upward gaze and slightly wandering left eye. It's fine on the shelf, but can make photography somewhat challenging. Her gun was completely warped upon removal from the package, but a hair dryer fixed that easily- I'm not sure why Hasbro makes some accessories from that rubbery plastic, but hope they stop. I'm not crazy about the buck they built this figure on either- while it's not a deal breaker, the hip joints give the figure a slightly bow-legged stance. Showing more of Misty's bionic arm would have been a nice touch, but the shoulder straps, unzipped bosom and belt/holster are nice, and her hair is great!

As a NYPD officer, Mercedes was injured in a bomb attack that resulted in amputation of her right arm. Tony Stark built her a bionic replacement, and rather than accepting a desk job, Mercedes became the hero Misty Knight! Pictured below, Misty Knight with Marvel Legends Black Panther Wave Invincible Iron Man, and Spider-Man Homecoming XLVII Iron Man Sentry...

While full of Misty has a lot going for her, Okoye and Nakia from the Black Panther Wave I reviewed are a class apart with their detailed sculpts and realistic facial decos. Still, I enjoy Misty for what she is, and love her afro and sassy style!

Marvel Legends 12" SDCC Exclusive Daredevil

A few months ago, this Marvel Legends 12" 2017 SDCC Exclusive Daredevil was  sixty bucks + shipping, but found it recently for under $45.00 shipped, so I took the dive. The accessories, beautiful box and 8 x 10" art cards included made this a special buy and welcome addition to my collection- check out the video:

As I understand, this Daredevil was built on the 12" Spider-Man buck, which I do not have, but I think the lean build fits the character well. There were complaints about Spider-Man's hips and lack of waist swivel, but this works fine for me- he can do plenty. Daredevil's butterfly joints at the shoulders and abdominal hinge have great range, and the torso hinge helps. And with ankle rockers and swiveled boot tops, the figure stands very naturally. The black-washed, laced boots, subtly metallic gauntlets, and masked head sculpt really sold me! The figure is based on art by Joe Quesada, also gracing the box and accompanying cards- I love the braille in relief on the back. Recommended!

Marvel Legends Black Panther Wave

I'd preordered the Invincible Iron Man from this wave in December, convinced I could resist buying the entire Marvel Legends Black Panther Series, but the Nakia and Okoye BAF were just to beautiful to ignore. I didn't mind getting a classic Sub-Mariner, and the Black Panther and Erik Killmonger turned out to be a pleasant surprise- check out the video:

2017 was definitely a return to Marvel Legends for myself, and there are some gems in this wave- all the extra heads, hands and accessories really made it great! Black Bolt doesn't do much for me, but Inhumans enthusiasts can couple him with the Walgreens Exclusive Medusa now. I'd have a hard time picking a favorite, but the Nakia and Okoye BAF ended up on top for myself- all the details in sculpt are outstanding...
